John 14:21 (NASB 95): He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him.
The true test of love is obedience. Christ put it another way…
John 14:15 (NASB 95): If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
Such a statement from our Lord puts to rest the notion that a Christian may live his or her life without regard to what God says. Some people say things like “They’ve made Him Savior but not Lord” when they see someone who claims to be a Christian living like the Devil.
But love without mutual understanding is not love at all. This is true with earthly relationships.
And…
…it’s certainly true of our heavenly relationship with our Father, God. The presence of obedience reflects the existence of a true relationship with God!
This doesn’t mean we’ll live perfect lives. We are still human. But it does mean we make the effort to please the One who has saved our very souls.
Our obedience reflects the relationship we have with God.
