Many want to get to God, but how is this done? How can we know we can get to God? If you’re curious, read on.

We Have a Universal Problem: We Struggle with Sin

Every person faces a universal truth: we are all flawed and imperfect. The Bible calls this flaw sin, and it’s fatal. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 6:23 starts, “For the wages of sin is death.” If you think none of this sounds good, you’re right!

Sin separates us from a holy and just God, creating a gap that no human effort can bridge.

Think of it this way. Our sin is an eternal act of rebellion against an eternal God. We are temporal beings. We could never fix the eternal problem because we aren’t eternal. That means no action we take could ever help us get to God.

It would be like trying to jump over the Grand Canyon at its greatest width without any help. We could never do it, and our sin separates us from God even more than this!

Not pretty. Let’s just say we can’t get to God, so let’s not even try. There’s a better way.

The Consequences of Sin

Sin has serious consequences. Remember Romans 6:23? It warns, “For the wages of sin is death.” This means that without intervention, sin leads to spiritual death and eternal separation in hell from God. This is humanity’s greatest problem—one that can’t be solved by good deeds, moral living, or religious rituals.

That Grand Canyon just seems insurmountable. Sound hopeless? It is, unless you read on.

Our Need for a Savior

Recognizing our sinful state highlights our desperate need for a Savior. Without someone to get us there, we could never vault over the Grand Canyon. God is on the other side, and if we want to get there, there’s only one answer.

God, in His love and mercy, provided an eternal solution through Jesus Christ. John 3:16 proclaims, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Did you notice that? God didn’t send an angel. He didn’t send a mere human being. He sent His Son.

What does that means? God sent someone divine: His Son. Jesus is God which means He is eternal.

But Jesus isn’t just the eternal God. He became a human being. He became fully human (Philippians 2:8). He was tested in every single way a human could be tested yet never sinned (Hebrews 4:15). He’s 100% God and man at the same time!

That perfect, eternal, human Being went to the cross on our behalf (Ephesians 2:8). Jesus lived a sinless life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again, conquering death. He is the eternal sacrifice for our sin. Because of this, the barrier of sin is removed, offering us the gift of eternal life.

Now, suddenly, a bridge, shaped like a cross spans the gap that once looked insurmountable. On that bridge that the eternal Christ provided, we can walk from here to there.

Accepting the Gift of Salvation

The cross is God’s gift to us, but we must believe in faith. It doesn’t take works, but it does take faith in Jesus Christ. We must step onto that bridge before we can take that trip over to the other side.

Ephesians 2:8-9 explains, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” To receive this gift, we must admit our need for forgiveness, believe in Jesus as our Savior, and commit to following Him.

Once we step onto that bridge, Christ ushers us to the other side right into the arms of our loving Father. What a wonderful gift!

Living in the Freedom of Grace

Jesus frees us from the bonds of sin when we believe in Him through faith. We are forgiven and free to live a life that honors God. We are told that He has destined us for good works (Ephesians 2:10).

Romans 8:1 assures us, “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” The bridge of the cross is something we will never have to cross again! (No pun intended!)

So What?

Acknowledging our sin and believing in faith in Jesus as our Lord and Savior is the only way we can vault the eternal Grand Canyon before us and get us to God. He is the only “Way, Truth and Life.” Access to God can’t be gained through any other method, only Jesus Christ alone.

God has offered you forgiveness, freedom, and eternal life through Jesus Christ. Will you accept His gift today?

Believe in Jesus today.
